Course Description: A condensed definition of the word “strategic” is, “carefully designed or planned to serve a particular purpose or advantage.” In the same way, “communication” means, “the imparting or exchanging of information or news.” Putting those two concepts together gives you a narrative of what this course is about. Strategic communication is the imparting of information in a carefully designed manner to serve a particular purpose. The class examines current Strategic Communication theory and practices. It doesn’t matter if the setting is vocational or ministerial, we will explore best practices of various communications concepts such as publicity, branding, social media, PR writing, celebrity, crisis management, event planning, campaigns, ethics, public opinion—just to name a few. But the real focus is the planning and intentionality of these factors in order to serve the goals and objectives of the organization.As a result of completing this course, you will be able to: 1. Explain the role and functions of Strategic Communication in a contemporary society. 2. Trace the historical evolution of Strategic Communication, career opportunities in the field, and professional/ethical/legal responsibilities. 3. Evaluate the basic process of Strategic Communication—research, planning, communication, evaluation. 4. Define best practices in the use of communications strategies and tactics including new releases to achieve organizational goals and objectives. 5. Demonstrate practical guidelines for utilizing written, spoken, and visual techniques to reach selected audience. 6. Create strategic communication activities suitable for use in nonprofit, education and government organizations.
