This course will establish a biblical-theological foundation for Christian Social Ministries. This class is a general introduction to biblical pastoral counseling, focusing on 8 basic foundational principles of basic counseling practice. We will explore the role of counseling in public, private, and church settings. This class relies heavily upon the use and interpretation of Scripture and is wholly centered in the gospel.Course Objectives: At the end of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Provide a biblical foundation for using the Scriptures in dealing with their own spiritual problems and the spiritual problems of others. 2. Demonstrate proficiency in using the Bible, rather than worldly wisdom, to deal with problems. 3. Comprehend the issues that people face and give an accurate evaluation in order to provide the necessary assistance. 4. Identify growth both in compassion and in the ability to help others make biblical changes and become better disciples of Christ. 5. Articulate an individual philosophy of pastoral counseling. 6. Explain each of the 8 basic foundational principles as they relate to the counselor/counselee role. 7. Demonstrate confidence both in Christ and in Scripture to meet people’s individual spiritual needs.
