ENGL221: Bible as Literature

This course introduces students to the major literary genres found in the Bible, exploring how narrative, poetry, wisdom literature, prophecy, parables, epistles, and apocalyptic writing shape meaning. Students learn to define these genres, evaluate their strengths and limitations for conveying biblical truth, and consider why authors use certain literary forms to accomplish their purpose. Through comparative analysis and creative application, students examine how literary style influences interpretation and communication. The course equips students to recognize genre cues and articulate the distinctive features of the Bible’s diverse literary styles.
