PM 253: Marriage and Family Counseling

Course Description: This class will introduce students to the ever changing landscape of marriage and family relationships. This course is designed to help each student understand family issues from a Biblical and counseling perspective. Emphasis will be on understanding the structure and function of the family, with discussion on the various aspects of the marital relationship. You will dive deeply into your own family history as a way of helping others deal with their individual family histories. Each student will learn to approach marriage and family counseling as a creative, preventative, and healing ministry.Course Objectives: At the end of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Provide a biblical foundation for using the Scriptures in dealing with issues with marriage and family counseling. 2. Demonstrate the ability to apply counseling models and techniques to appropriate situations related to marriage and family counseling. 3. Evaluate individual family history, and how past generational attributes affect present actions and attitudes. 4. Recognize and diagnose idols of the heart in the family dynamic. 5. Identify growth both in compassion and in the ability to help others make biblical changes and become better disciples of Christ. 6. Demonstrate confidence both in Christ and in Scripture to meet the spiritual needs of others in a marriage or family.
